I was browsing through the new Google Maps Street View coverage in Chicago trying to find the places I remembered from my childhood, and I realized that Google Maps needs some kind of “What the hell is that right there?” button.

For instance, I could swear that there was a gyro joint near the corner of Kedzie and Foster, but it appears to have been knocked down to build either a parking lot or some little drive through place that’s there now. But I can’t tell what the drive through thing is. Why can’t Google go through and label everything it has results for on the current map window?

  1. This is the place you are thinking of:

But better gyros were available at George’s on the corner of Foster and Sawyer.

  2. Yeah, I can make out the sign now that I know what it says. Good lookin’ out!

They’ve certainly had a makeover since I was a kid - it was basically a shack back then.

Not that it matters what the gyros tasted like - I was way too chicken to eat things like that back then. Oh how I wish I could go back and slap some sense into my younger self. There I was, living in one of the great food towns of America and too scared to indulge. For shame, Jemal. For shame.

  4. Good call - and I finally get to try the exotic cuisine of “Le Hooters” on Saturday. I’m sure it will be great.
