I’ve been pretty happy with my cameras, a Nikon D50 and a Sony DSC-T7, but the new Sony DSC-T200 combines the best qualities of both a “thing of beauty” and a “joy forever.” 8.1 megapixels, 5x optical zoom as well as lens-based image-stabilization. And it’s so pretty!

Thank goodness I’m broke or I’d really be in trouble!

  1. Your self-discipline is almost admirable.

I failed to resist the purchase of a Garmin Street Pilot c340 (link: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=290)
I bought it for myself for Christmas. It should arrive tomorrow.

I used to think I had a pretty good sense of direction. But living in an area without straight roads, few roads that run north-south or east-west, where street signs are rare, and where there are no streetlights I find myself often getting llost. A friend has one of these GPS units (a c320) and has demonstrated it for me. I am going to love it. I got it at two thirds of the retail price, a very good deal.

    Moral: Resistance is futile.

  2. Yeah, some of the point and shoots are getting pretty tempting. I’ve been thinking about picking up one just to have a camera I can carry around in my pocket for times that I don’t have the D70 with me.

Fortunately, I am broke as well. =P

  3. @skank: Yeah, Kellie got me a Garmin last Xmas, and I got her a TomTom (that has stopped working) for our anniversary. Great for road trips and finding the fastest way home from the mall. Even the highways aren’t straight out here.

@jerry: I think there’s a place in the arsenal for a whole range of cameras - my only problem with point-and-shoots is that the batteries (especially in thin ones like my Sony) are weak and are never charged when I want to take pictures.

On the other hand, there are a bunch of replacement Nikon batteries that deliver more milliamps than the name brand.

  4. Oh, and the Garmin suction cup sticks great on a windshield, but doesn’t release worth a darn. After baking in the sun for a summer, mine ripped when I tried to remove it and left a nasty black ring. YMMV.

  5. Because my Tom Tom isn’t working I am hoping to get a new one for Christmas. I really like the tom Tom compared to the Garmin. I prefer the bigger screen. Any place to do a product comparison online?
