I’ve been wanting to do some photoblogging for a while. Not the kind that requires great compositions or tireless dedication, just a simple place to stick pictures of my kids and what-not. But even the simple Movable Type upload picture routine seemed overly complicated. Editing, sizing, naming, moving, uploading, describing – too much work. Until…
Google made it simple. Well, actually, two companies and three products that Google bought made it simple. Those products would be Blogger, Picasa and Hello. Blogger, as everyone knows, is a the free web-based blogging tool. Picasa is a photo-archiving application. And Hello is an integrated instant messenger for photos. But how does that help? Like this:
- Subscribe to Blogger. Set up a blog either on your server (through the ftp interface) or theirs. Pick your template, turn off the nav bar, enter a few details about yourself and you’re ready to
- Download Picasa. Tell it where you keep your digital photos, let it sort through your hard drive, learn the strangely appealing interface. Then get ready to
- Install Hello. You need an account, since it’s an instant messenger, but it’s a very smooth process. You’ll want to set up the BloggerBot by telling it your Blogger account information and how you want to format your pictures. Then head back to
- Picasa, which suddenly has a little button down at the bottom right corner of the screen while you’re looking at one of your pictures. Pick a pic, click the button, and a Hello chat window pops up. Choose your BloggerBot, type a caption, and hit send.
- Enjoy your photoblog.
Or rather, my photoblog. I know I am. I’ll try to get a few more pics up there soon.
If you need any help setting something like this up for yourself, feel free to ask in the comments or send me an email.
