February 2nd, 2004 by Jemaleddin Cole

Five years ago today I set off on an adventure.

My wife and I had gotten married the day before, partied with some of our friends and family the night before, and finally set out on our honeymoon on February second.

We had an enormously good time. We drove south to get out of the cold and stayed only in hotels that had king-sized beds and Jacuzzis. We stopped at art museums and restaurants and went places we’d never heard of. We didn’t have a plan, and we didn’t get any maps before we left. No reservations, no restrictions, no preparations.

Like I said, an adventure.

What I didn’t know then was that this was the kind of trip that never ends. How could I have known that the road would just keep stretching out before us and that we’d keep ending up places that we hadn’t planned? And that five years later I’d be happier than the day I set out?

And how could I know that the person who made that vacation so perfect would still be beside me today?

Happy anniversary, beautiful.
